The Western Michigan Broncos will face off against the Oakland Golden Grizzlies at the CBE Hall of Fame Classic this Wednesday night.
The Western Michigan Broncos are 1-0 on the young season as they cruised to 87-57 victory over the Aquinas College Saints this past Sunday night. The Broncos made it to the NCAA tournament last after dominating Toledo last year in the Mid-American conference tournament, however, didn’t make it very far as they were taking out in the first-round by Syracuse. Although most people have Toledo listed as the conference favorites this year and the Broncos lost their most important piece of last year’s team in big man Shayne Whittington (16.1 ppg, 8.9 rpg), Western Michigan still has a chance to make some noise in the conference as they return the majority of their starting line-up from last year’s team in Pre-Season All-Conference guard David Brown (19.1 ppg, 3.5 rpg). Along with David Brown, the Broncos will look for Connor Tava (11.8 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 2.9 apg) and Austin Richie (7.9 ppg, 2.2 rpg) to become bigger contributors this year. In their season opening victory the Broncos shot a ridiculous 58.9% from the field led by Austin Richie 28 points (10-11 from the field, 5-5 3-pointers) and David Brown who ended up with 20 points (8-10 from the field), 3 rebounds, and 3 assists.

The Oakland Golden Grizzlies have had a rough start to the season, begining their season with a 93-82 lost at Iowa State this past Friday and followed it up with a 89-77 lost against Eastern Michigan on Monday. It could be a long season for the Golden Grizzlies if head coach Greg Kampe doesn’t find some answers on the defensive end of the ball as currently, the Golden Grizzlies are currently ranked 343rd in the country allowing an average of 91.0 ppg. The good news for Coach Greg Kampe and the Golden Grizzlies is that they do know how to put the ball in the basket. Oakland is led by senior forward Corey Petros, reigning Horizon Freshman of the Year Kahlil Felder, and former St. John’s guard/forward Max Cooper. Copper led the Golden Grizzles with 18 points on 6-11 shooting from 3-point range against Eastern Michigan. So far in the young season, both Petros and Felder are averaging 19.0 ppg, however, Felder is shooting just 31.4% from the field.
The Broncos are 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 games while also finding success against Horizon League opponents going 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games. The Golden Grizzlies are 4-11-1 ATS in their last 16 games and just 1-6 ATS in their last 7 vs. the Mid-American Conference.
Oakland has some great players in Petros and Felder, however, Coach Kampe’s team lacks depth on the bench and once again can’t seem to stop anyone on the defensive side of the ball. Although the Broncos lost Whittington, I feel that the Broncos return enough fire power to be able to put away the Golden Grizzlies in what will most likely be another high-scoring game.
