The Texas A&M Aggies and Dayton Flyers play Thursday afternoon at Coliseo de Puerto Rico.
The Texas A&M Aggies won their season opener with a 109-68 victory over the Northwestern St Demons. Texas A&M shot 56.8 percent from the field and grabbed 52 rebounds, while the defense allowed 36.2 percent shooting and forced 18 turnovers. Jalen Jones led the way with 16 points and five rebounds, and Antwan Space scored 16 points in 19 minutes off the bench. Alex Caruso dished out eight assists and Jordan Green had 15 points and seven assists. The Texas A&M Aggies still have a ways to before competing with the big boys in the SEC, but this is a deeper team than last season and has enough talent to be a middle of the road team that can surprise some people. Tonny Trocha-Morelos still remains questionable while Texas A&M continues to work out his eligibility status.
USA TODAY Sports
The Dayton Flyers won their first game with a victory over the Alabama A&M Bulldogs, 76-52. In the win, Dayton shot 47.1 percent from the field and had 17 assists on 24 made baskets, while the defense held the Bulldogs to 32.7 percent shooting and forced 13 turnovers. Darrell Davis led Dayton with 17 points off the bench and Dyshawn Pierre had 16 points and nine rebounds. Scoochie Smith had eight assists and Devon Scott was a point away from a double-double to go with his 12 rebounds. Of course, the Dayton Flyers were the surprise team of last year’s NCAA tournament and returns enough talent to compete for an Atlantic 10 title. Jordan Sibert is one of the better players in the A-10, and he leads a Dayton squad that’s more than capable of shooting lights out of the gym.
The Aggies are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 vs. Atlantic 10 and 3-13 ATS in their last 16 neutral site games. The Flyers are 42-19 ATS in their last 61 non-conference games and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
While Texas A&M has improved, the Dayton Flyers are the more experienced and overall better team. Dayton also has the better coach and knows just home important these mini tournaments are to help get the players ready for the heart of their schedule. Give me the Flyers and the small chalk.
