The Charlotte 49ers lock horns with the South Carolina Gamecocks on Friday.
The Charlotte 49ers improved to 2-0 on the season as they defeated Penn State 106-97 in a two overtime marathon. Neither team really discovered the art of defense in this one although the boxscore says the 49ers played some defense with the Nittany Lions held to 39% from the floor while Charlotte connected at a hefty 49% athough PSU mustered 17 more looks at the basket with a few more offensive boards and turnovers which they put to good use. Braxton Ogbueze pacing the offense with 26 points with Mike Thorne Jr. right on his heels with 23 points and 16 rebounds. Terrance Williams added 13 before fouling out with Torin Dorn and Keyshawn Woods contributing 12 and eleven points.
The South Carolina Gamecocks aren't getting many accolades in the preseason as the SEC experts have this team finishing somewhere near the bottom of the conference. So far the Gamecocks are doing well with a 2-1 record after throttling Cornell 69-45 on Thursday night. The naysayers will claim that beating Cornell is not an eart shattering feat which it isn't but beating a bad team easily is the best that can be expected. The Gamecocks jumped out to a 14 point lead at the break and never let up with the Big Red held to 27% shooting and forced in to 17 turnovers. That made South Carolina's 38% marksmanship golden with their eight more field goals. Balanced scoring was the key with ten players scoring with 14 points from Sinndarius Thornwell and a ten point, eleven board effort from Mindaugas Kacinas eading the way.
Charlotte are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 vs. Southeastern. For South Carolina the under is 14-2 in South Carolina's last 16 overall while South Carolina are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 Fri. games. I'm mot sure trends mean a whole lot early in the season because in all honesty we don't know how some teams will look coming out of the gate. If we believe the experts Charlotte is a dangerous squad with four of their top scorers back while nobody seems to have a ton of faith in South Carolina. I'll look at this further until a line comes out so please check back...
