The Syracuse Orange and the Iowa Hawkeyes face off on Friday in Madison Square Garden in the 2K Sports Classic 3rd Place game.
The Syracuse Orange were favored against Cal on Thursday but when they stepped onto the court and played it was clearly the Orange who were over matched. Syracuse shot just 35.9 percent from the floor including 23.5 percent from beyond the three-point arc and just 50 percent from the line and against the better teams like the Golden Bears that doesn’t get it done. Kaleb Joseph and Michael Gbinije each had 13 points and Chris McCullough had 12 points and seven rebounds. Cal neutralized Rakeem Christmas as he scored eight points and grabbed just six rebounds. Syracuse will look to bounce back but this looks to be a rebuilding year for the Orange.
The Iowa Hawkeyes got off to a fast start on Thursday against Texas and led by six points at the half but they couldn’t hold on as they lost by 14 points. Iowa shot a dreadful 29.6 percent from the floor and 28.6 percent from beyond the three-point arc and were out-rebounded by the Longhorns 39-34. Aaron White had 23 points and eight rebounds including hitting 14 of 16 free throws, Adam Woodbury had 10 points and eight rebounds, and Jarrod Uthoff had eight points and six rebounds. It was a game effort from Iowa but in the end hey didn’t have the guns to hang with Texas.
Syracuse is 2-5 against the spread in their last seven games, 2-9-1 against the spread in their last 12 games, and 2-6-1 against the spread against a team with a winning record. Iowa is 17-7 against the spread in non-conference games, 1-4 against the spread in neutral site games, and 0-6 against the spread following a loss.
Syracuse simply doesn't look ready for the better teams right now so I have to take Iowa and lay the points.
