The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks will face off against the Baylor Bears this Monday night at the Ferrell Center.
It’s been a tough week for the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (1-2) as they saw their 34 home game winning streak come to an end last Tuesday losing 79-77 in overtime versus Northern Iowa and then suffered a lopsided 81-63 loss to a tough Xavier team this past Friday night. At Xavier, the Lumberjacks were led by Jacob Parker who put up 21 points (8-17 shooting; 5-10 3PM-A), 4 rebs and Thomas Walkup who had 17 points and 8 rebounds. Ty Charles also had a nice game off the bench chipping in 10 points on 4-6 shooting. Although the Lumberjacks are off to a bit of slow start for their standards, they still are the team to beat in the Southland conference although they lost one of their stars in Desmond Haymond (14.5 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 2.9 apg) from last year’s squad who upset VCU in the first round of the NCAA tournament. For the Lumberjacks to turn it around, they’ll need to start getting it more done more on the defensive end (ranked 229th in the country in points allowed at 69.7 ppg) and the free throw line where they are only shooting 59.1% so far in the young season.

The Baylor Bears come into this contest a perfect 3-0 with a 60-45 win this past Friday against the Prairie View Panthers. The Bears used a big first-half to jump out to a commanding 37-22 lead and pretty much put it on cruise control in the second half. The Bears used a well-balanced attack against the Panthers and were led by Rico Gathers who had 12 points and 12 rebounds and Taurean Prince who had 15 points (6-7 FG), 4 reb, and 2 stl. Baylor is led by their Senior Guard, Kenny Chery who is averaging a solid 11.7 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 2.0 apg, 2.3 spg. Freshman Johnathan Motley is chipping with 11.0 ppg and 4.7 rpg. Baylor has been getting it done on defense as currently they are only giving up an average of 49.7 ppg while also cleaning up the glass by averaging 41.7 rpg which ranked 56th in the country. Baylor is only projected to be in the middle of the pack in the Big 12 this year, however if Baylor can continue to play the defense they’ve displayed early in the season, and get enough production out of Chery and his supporting staff, Coach Scott Drew’s team could threaten the top-tier teams in the Big 12 this season.
The Bears are 4-1-1 in their last 6 home games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games. The under has been 5-2 for the Lumberjacks in the last 7 road games.
The Baylor Bears have had an impressive start to their season, however really haven’t had that much competition and almost lost at South Carolina who is certainly not a strong team. Although the Lumberjacks are a much different team on the road, I think if they are getting enough points when/if the lines come out, they are the pick in this one.
