The Brigham Young Cougars butt heads with the Chaminade Silverswords in the Maui Classic.
The Brigham Young Cougars and their big offense had powered their way to a 3-0 start but ran in to another tough scoring team in San Diego State and were dealt a 92-87 defeat in the Maui Classic. The Aztecs hit shots at 48.5% and the Cougars were held 38.5% but hit 13 long balls and mustered 12 more looks to stay close with SDSU killing themselves with 14 missed free throws in game that probably shouldn't have gone to OT. Tyler Haws led all scorers with 26 points followed by a 21 point, six pull effort by Kyle Collinsworth. Anson Winder added 14 points and another five yanks while Isaac Neilson and Chase Fischer contributed 12 and eleven points respectively.

The Chaminade Silverswords dropped their season opener by an 81-68 count to Pittsburgh which happened to be a first round game in the Maui Classic. If you follow Chaminade you know this team likes to fire away from the perimeter but doesn't have the size to bang inside. That's how this one played out with 51% marksmanship including an 11-27 performance from long range. That was the good news as the Panthers connected at 46% but mustered 14 more looks at the basket thanks to a 47-14 edge on the backboards that included 25 offensive rebounds. Kuany Kuany paced three double digit scorers with 12 points and five rebounds while Frankie Eyeuati and Lee Bailey added eleven points each with Bailey handing out nine helpers.
The Silverswords don't get lined very often except in the tournaments they play in around the holidays so there aren't any trends to go on. What I do know is this team will be shooting from the outside for 40 minutes and hope the outside shot is falling so they can be competitive with Brigham Young. The Cougars will dominate the paint and the backboards because Chaminade has zero size and they will have their way on the perimeter because they have the talent to score anywhere. Chaminade could cover if BYU just goes through the motions on defense but I think the over might be worth a look when released...
