The San Diego State Aztecs and the Pittsburgh Panthers face off on Tuesday in Maui in a semi-final matchup of the Maui Invitational college basketball tournament.
The San Diego State Aztecs needed double overtime on Monday to get past BYU but in the end they emerged with a win. Aqeel Quinn had 22 points to lead SDSU including hitting some big shots down the stretch. Winston Shepard had 18 points and eight rebounds, Trey Kell had 14 points, and J.J. O’Brien had 13 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. SDSU shot 48.5 percent from the field including 33.3 percent from beyond the three-point arc but they were just 61.3 percent from the free throw line. San Diego State won the battle of the boards 43-32 limiting the highflying Cougars second chances. It will remain to be seen the toll he extra frame takes on SDSU.

The Pittsburgh Panthers knocked off Chaminade by 13 points on Monday to advance to this semi-final game. Pitt shot 46 percent from the floor including 41.2 percent from beyond the 3-point arc and 69.6 percent from the free throw line. Michael Young led Pittsburgh in scoring with 27 points while grabiing 15 rebounds. James Robinson had 17 points and five assists, Derrick Randall had 11 points and 21 rebounds, and Josh Newkirk had 10 points and eight assists. Pittsburgh absolutely dominated the board outrebounding the over matched Chaminade 47-14. The level of competiton obviously goes way up for Pittsburgh in this one.
San Diego State is 3-0-1 against the spread following a win, 8-2 against the spread in their last eight neutral site games, and 4-0-1 against the spread in their last five non-conference games.
