The Cleveland State Vikings will take on the Marshall Thundering Herd at the Global Sports Hoop Showcase this Friday night.
The Cleveland State Vikings come into this contest 2-3, coming off a low-scoring 45-33 loss to the number 6th ranked Louisville Cardinals this past Wednesday. The Vikings had all sorts of trouble on the offensive side of the ball against the difficult Cardinal defense as they only shot 25% from the field, 21.0% from long-range, and an inexcusable 37.5% from the free-throw line. One bright spot for the Vikings was in Trey Lewis as he scored 24 of Cleveland State’s 33 points while also grabbing 5 rebounds. The Vikings have some talent in their starting five, as along with Trey Lewis (17.6 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 3.4 apg, 2.2 spg), Anton Grady (11.2 ppg, 6.2 rpg) and Marlin Mason (10.8 ppg, 6.0 rpg) are talented players. Head Coach Gary Waters knows that he has a talented duo in both Lewis and Grady that can score ball, and will hope that his defensive, which currently is giving up 62.4 ppg (ranked 113th) and getting 9.8 spg (ranked 17th), can continue to put in similar efforts as they did against Louisville.
USA TODAY Sports
The Marshall Thundering Herd come into this match-up with a 3-2 record on the season, however, have dropped their last two games, a 85-67 loss at Louisville and a 77-68 loss against the Morehead State Eagles. In their recent loss against Morehead State, the Thundering Herd struggled from the field as they only shot 35.9% (23-64 FGM-A) and an even worse 24.1% (7-29 3PM-A) from long range. Leading the Herd was Ryan Taylor who had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Although the Thundering Herd and first year Head Coach Dan D’Antoni lost two of their top scorers from last year’s squad in Kareem Canty (16.3 ppg) and Chris Thomas (12.7 ppg), they’ve had decent success on the offensive side with D’Antoni high-paced offensive as they currently are scoring 72.4 ppg (ranked 123rd), grabbing 43.8 rpg (ranked 23rd), and dishing out 17.6 apg (ranked 27th). Leading the Thundering Herd on the season has been Ryan Taylor (16.4 ppg, 10.6 reb, and 4.4 apg), Shawn Smith (12.0 ppg), and Cheikh Sane (9.8 ppg and 7.8 rpg).
The Vikings are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 non-conference games and 20-8-1 ATS in their last 29 games overall. The Thundering Herd are 6-0-1 ATS in their last 7 games following an ATS loss, however, just 7-18-1 ATS in their last 26 non-conference games.
The Thundering Herd weren’t projected to do much this year but have played some decent basketball early in the season. Although Coach D’Antoni does seem to have the Marshall offensive running well, I believe that Cleveland State are starting to find their identity after the recent loss to Louisville and think that the Vikings dangerous combination of Trey Lewis and Anton Grady will be too much for the Thundering Herd. I’m going to take Cleveland State to cover this small spread.
