The Virginia Cavaliers and La Salle Explorers will square off this Friday night at the Barclays Center Classic.
The 8th ranked Virginia Cavaliers come into this match-up a perfect 5-0 after dismantling the Tennessee State Tigers by a score of 79-36 this past Tuesday night. Leading the way for the Cavaliers was Justin Anderson who was a perfect 7-7 from the field (5-5 3PM-A) for 20 points and Anthony Gill who had 16 points and 9 rebounds. Virginia is once again dominating teams on the defensive end as they currently are the best in the country in points allowed at 44.6 ppg, ranked 28th in defensive rebounds at 29.4 per game, and ranked 9th in blocks at 7.4 per game. Although the Cavaliers have played a weak schedule outside of their 59-42 win vs. George Washington, they have absolutely been destroying teams at average of 27.2 points per game. Leading the way for the Cavaliers so far this season has been Justin Anderson (16.8 ppg, 4.8 rpg), Anthony Gill (11.8 ppg, 6.0 rpg), and star point guard Malcolm Brogdon (10.8 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 3.0 apg). If Virginia can continue to finds ways to score (currently ranked 128th at 71.8 ppg) and play the dominating the defense they’ve displayed, this will be one of the top teams in the NCAA throughout the year.

The La Salle Explorers also come into this match-up perfect on the season at 4-0 with a recent 73-60 victory over the Saint Francis (NY) Terriers this past Tuesday night. La Salle shot 46.6% from the field against the Terriers and were led by Jordan Price who had 30 points (10-17 FG), 6 rebounds, and 7 assists. La Salle and Head Coach John Giannini’s Explorers had a disappointing 2013-14 season, after coming off an unexpected run to the sweet 16 in 2012. Although La Salle had the majority of their team back from the 2012 team last year, the Explorers had difficulty scoring and it looks as if this could again be a problem this year currently the Explorers are averaging just 62.3 ppg (ranked 273rd) on 36.6% shooting (ranked 328th). Leading the Explorers this year has been Jordan Price (19.3ppg, 3.5 rpg, 3.0 apg) and Jerrell Wright (10.3 ppg, 9.8 rpg). La Salle has been winning games on the defensive end as they are currently ranked 22nd in the country in points allowed giving up just 55.0 ppg, and doing a nice job on the boards as they are ranked 76th with 39.5 rpg.
The Cavaliers are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games and 20-5-2 ATS in their last 27 games overall. The Explorers are 6-16 in their last 22 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record and just 8-22-1 ATS in their last 31 games overall.
This game has all the makings to be a low-scoring affair, however, I do think that Virginia has enough offensive power to score on La Salle. Virginia is playing well right now and I don’t see anything from La Salle that make me feel confident that they are going to be able to score against Virginia. I’m going to take Virginia to cover the large spread.
