The Buffalo Bulls and Canisius Griffins will battle in the Big Four Classic this Saturday afternoon.
The Buffalo Bulls cruised to an 80-64 victory against the Grand Canyon Antelopes to make them 3-1 on the young season. The Bulls shot 51.9% from the field in their recent victory and were led by Justin Moss who had 26 points and 9 rebound and Shannon Evans who had 23 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists. Although the Bulls have 3 wins, they are probably most well-known this season from their one loss against the number one ranked Kentucky Wildcats, in which the Bulls actually led at halftime 38-33. Head Coach Bobby Hurley has a lot of new faces in the line-up this year and will need to find a replacements for 2013-14 MAC player of the year Javon McCrea (18.5 pg, 9.9 rpg), Joshua Freelove (13.5 ppg) and Jarod Oldham (8.5 ppg, 5.3 apg). Outside of Justin Moss (17.5 ppg, 8.5 rpg) and Shannon Evans (16.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 4.0 apg) Coach Hurley will be relying on both Jarryn Skeete (11.8 ppg, 4.5 rpg) and Will Regan (5.3 ppg, 4.5 rpg) to provide major contributions for the bulls. The Bulls have been in getting it done in the paint early in the season as they are grabbing 39.0 rpg (ranked 78th) and blocking 4.8 shots per game (ranked 68th), however, even though they are averaging 68.8 ppg, they are only shooting 39.2% from the field.
USA TODAY Sports
The Canisius Golden Griffins loss their second straight game to the Cornell Big Red 67-60 which dropped them to 2-2 on the season. Although the Griffins were able to force 23 turnovers from the Big Red, once again they had trouble scoring the ball as they shot a woeful 33.3% from the field. Leading the way for the Golden Griffins were Zach Lewis who had 14 points on just 5-15 shooting and Jermaine Crumpton who had 15 points and 3 rebounds off the bench. The Golden Griffins have a deep squad as in their recent contest they had 10 players who played at least 14 minutes. Coach Jim Baron will need to find a way to get his team to start hitting some more shots as currently the Golden Griffins ranked 340th in the country in FG% at 34.2% per game. The good news for Canisius is that they are going a nice job on the defense end at holding opponents to just 59.3 ppg which is ranked 65th in the country.
The Bulls are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games and 19-7 ATS in their last 26 games overall. The Golden Griffins are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
Although Buffalo was expected to take a step-back after losing some key players, Coach Hurley has the Bulls playing good basketball early in the season. Both teams have had trouble scoring the basketball so far this season, but Buffalo had a nice game in their recent contest and did have to face a dominating Kentucky Wildcat defense which is going to hurt any teams FG%. I like how Buffalo is playing and I’m going to take them to cover the small spread.
