The Columbia Lions face their biggest challenge of the season when they go on the road to play the Kentucky Wildcats.
The Columbia Lions are picked by many to challenge Harvard and Yale for supremacy in the Ivy League with a roster packed with experience. We shall see but it's been fairly smooth sailing in the early going thus far with the Lions building a 5-2 record with both defeats coming by a combined three points. This team doesn't score a lot or give up a lot and that trend continued in a 62-39 victory over visiting Bucknell on Saturday. The Bison were held to 28% from the floor while Columbia hit at 45% including a 10-22 mark from long range. Maodo Lo led all scorers with 20 points on 7-12 with Cory Osetkowski turning in a 12 point, 12 rebound and six assist effort while blocking three shots.
The top ranked Kentucky Wildcats have the SEC title and National Championship on their to do list and with a roster loaded with NBA type talent it's not as if they are a long shot. The Wildcats seem to recruit players for a year and when they leave for the big leagues another NBA type recruit takes their place and the process is repeated. UK has built a 9-0 record behind above average scoring and defense with an 82-49 rout of Eastern Kentucky just another walk in the park. The Colonels fell behind 41-14 after 20 minutes with 26% shooting setting the tone while Kentucky burned the nets at 57%. Karl-Anthony Towns pumped in a game high 19 points and grabbed nine boards with Willie Cauley-Stein tossing in eleven. The duo of Marcus Lee and Trey Lyles scored ten points each with Lyles hauling in ten rebounds.
The Lions are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600 while going 36-15 ATS in their last 51 non-conference games. Columbia are 17-8 ATS in their last 25 games after allowing less than 50 points in their previous game and are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 Wednesday games. The Wildcats are 10-4-1 ATS in their last 15 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600 and are 10-4-1 ATS in their last 15 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. Kentucky are 12-5-1 ATS in their last 18 games overall and are 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS win.Columbia is an interesting team but if Kentucky plays hard for 40 minutes I like them...
