The Akron Zips welcome the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders to the James A. Rhodes Arena Saturday.
I'm still trying to figure out the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders although this certainly looks like a rebuilding year to a certain extent. In recent years the Blue Raiders were a big time offense but now have to control the scoreboard and lean on their defense and ball protection. MTSU did just enough of everything to squeeze out a 68-67 victory at South Alabama to end a three game slide. The Jaguars hit at 43% from the floor and gave the ball away 15 times to make their own 44.6% accuracy hold up although making just 14-25 from the line made things too close for comfort. Jacquez Rozier led a trio of double digit scorers with 12 points and eight rebounds with Jaqawn Raymond adding eleven points and five yanks. Reggie Upshaw Jr. and Edward Simpson Jr. contributed ten and nine points with Upshaw hauling in nine boards.

The Akron Zips have generally been found somewhere near the top of the MAC standings although I could see a few chinks in the armor the past few seasons and especially so last year. They are out to prove they are back and so far the Zips are getting the job done with a 6-2 record and the momentum of three straight victories following a 73-49 rout of visiting Western Illinois with a 21 point lead after 20 minutes putting this in the win column. This was the Zips defense that deserved the credit by holding the Leathernecks to 35% from the field. Akron sank shots at a 43% pace with 13 bombs doing a Lion's Share of the damage. Kwan Cheatham Jr. was top scorer with 15 points and five pulls followed by a 14 point effort from Pat Forsythe. Jake Kretzer and Deji Ibitayo tossed in 13 and eleven points respectively with Reggie McAdams chipping in eight points.
The Blue Raiders are 34-16-1 ATS in their last 51 Saturday games while going 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall. MTSU are 7-19 ATS in their last 26 road games vs. a team with a winning home record and are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games following a S.U. win. The Zips are 6-1-1 ATS in their last 8 games following a SU win of more than 20 points and are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games. Akron are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and are 17-7 ATS in their last 24 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400. The Blue Raiders are not the same team they were the past several years and Akron might be a tad better. Line seems about right but...
