The Southern Methodist Mustangs look to avoid the upset bid of the Illinois-Chicago Flames.
Illinois-Chicago appears to be fighting for survival even though we are just eleven games in to the season as they are struggling to control the scoreboard which is a bad sign going forward. The Flames dropped a heartbreaking 81-78, overtime decision to visiting Tennessee-Martin as a 17-2 run erased a big deficit to force the extra session only to trail throughout the added five minutes. UIC struggled with their shot at 38% but stayed alive with eleven more attempts to offset the Skyhawks 45% from the field. Paris Burns was the offensive star with 24 points and five helpers on 10-17 accuracy followed by a 23 point, six pull effort fromMarc Brown. Jake Weigand tossed in 18 points but no other player managed more then five points.

After a 27 win season a year ago the expectations for the Southern Methodist Mustangs aree high in the AAC and the national stage. The defensive minded Mustangs are off to a 6-3 start and are riding the momentum of a four game winning streak after an 80-73, overtime defeatof UC Santa Barbara. The boxscore says SMU had enough advantages to avoid overtime with 42.6%-35.8% shooting edge as well as sinking 13 more free throws. The problem was the Gauchos had 13 more shot attemps which were put to good use. Keith Frazier paced five double digit scorers with 20 points with Yanick Moreira tossing in 15 points and snagging five pulls. Ryan Manuel was next in line with 12 points while Ben Moore and Cannen Cunningham combined for 21 points and 18 rebounds.
The Flames are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games following three or more consecutive home games and are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 Wednesday games. Illinois-Chicago are 14-6 ATS in their last 20 road games vs. a team with a winning home record and are 13-6 ATS in their last 19 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600. The Mustangs are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400 and are 11-5 ATS in their last 16 games vs. a team with a losing S.U. record. SMU are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 Wednesday games and 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 home games. Southern Methodist has blowout potential and won't be upset but I don't like the huge chalk and wouldn't be happy with either side...
