The Providence Friars look for the upset of the Miami Hurricanes in Monday night action.
The Miami Hurricanes pulled off a huge surprise in winning the AAC a season ago but no surprises were expected from this team this year with some production graduating. However the Hurricanes have been making a name for themselves with a #19 ranking with a 9-2 record behind decent scoring and suffocating defense. The Canes didn't perform like a top 20 team Friday with Eastern Kentucky scored a 72-44 victory with a 45-19 second half run breaking open a close game. The storyline is EKU hit at 51% from the floor with 12 bombs and the Canes hit at 29% and that was all the Colonels needed. Sheldon McClellan was Miami's only DD scorer with 14 points followed by Deandre Burnett with nine points and five yanks.
The Providence Friars are off to a rock solid 9-3 start which might come as a surprise to many but as I said befor, when you can score and defend winning is never a surprise and that describes the Friars who have outscored opponents 70-62. The Friars rolled to win number three in a row in impreeive fashion in an 85-65 rout of rival Massachusetts on Friday night. Providence jumped to a 13 point advantage after 20 minutes and built the lead in the second half. The D held the Minutemen to 42% from the field and forced 18 turnovers which gave the 45% shooting Friars 23 more looks at the basket and plenty found the bottom of the net. LaDontae Henton poured in a game high 27 points and snagged six pulls with a 16 point and eleven assist effort from Kris Dunn. Tyler Harris and Carson Desrosiers netted 12 and ten points with nine scoring overall.
The Hurricanes are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a S.U. loss and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games following a ATS loss. Miami are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games. The Friars are 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a S.U. win and 6-0 ATS in their last 6 neutral site games. Providence are 12-3-1 ATS in their last 16 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600 and 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a ATS win. Either team is capable of winning this and the spread says as much but I am hoping it's the Friars...
