The BYU Cougars dropped to 10-4 on the season and 0-1 in WCC Conference play after losing 87-80 to the Gonzaga Bulldogs this past Saturday night. Although the Cougars scored 80 points, they struggled a bit on offensive end for their standards as they shot only 39.7% from the field and 28.0% (7-25 3PM-A) from long range. Leading the way for BYU was Kyle Collinsworth who had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Cougars are ranked 53rd in the RPI Standings and have played the 24th ranked SOS. On the season, BYU has been led by Tyler Haws (21.9 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 2.4 apg), Anson Winder (14.4 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 1.8 apg), and Kyle Collinsworth (13.1 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 5.7 apg, 2.2 spg). Offensively, the Cougars are averaging 87.1 ppg (ranked 3rd) on 46.6% shooting (ranked 64th). BYU makes an average of 9.0 three-pointers per game (ranked 16th) on 38.4% shooting (ranked 48th). Defensively, the Cougars are allowing their opponents to score an average of 75.1 ppg (ranked 320th) on 43.3% shooting (ranked 217th). BYU does a nice job on the glass as they average 27.21 defensive rpg (ranked 36th) and 39.86 total rpg (ranked 36th).
The Pilots are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall, and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 home games. The Cougars are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record.
BYU played Gonzaga real tough on Saturday but seemed to run out of gas a bit at the end. The Cougars offensive can put up points in a hurry, however I think it’s going to be hard for the Cougars to bring the same level of energy against Portland as they did with Gonzaga. Although I don’t think Portland will win this game outright, I think their offensive will have no issues putting up points in this match-up and keep this one close. There is no spread at the moment however, if Portland is getting more than 5 points I’m going to take the Pilots.
