The Southern Utah Thunderbirds look for their first conference win versus the Sacramento State Hornets.
If you follow the Southern Utah Thunderbirds the past several years you know they haven't enjoyed a great deal of success. Having said that the Thunderbirds appear to have taken a baby step forward but their 3-9 record says there is obvious room for further improvement. SUU nearly stole the Big Sky opener before falling 71-68 at Portland State Thursday night in a game they trailed from start to finish. SUU shot the ball well enough to win at 47% while holding the Vikings to 37% but they were forced to foul all to often and Portland State held a 28-17 lead at the line. Trey Kennedy gave the Thunderbirds 16 points on 5-9 from the field while AJ Hess scored 13 and Casey Oliverson added 12 points and six pulls.
USA TODAY Sports
The Sacramento State Hornets are hoping for big things in the Big Sky and much of what happens could depend on whether the defense finds a way to get stops because 67 points allowed is a bit on the high side. The offense saved the day in a 78-73 victory versus visiting Northern Arizona on Thursday with 51% marksmanship adding up to five more field goals over the 43% shooting Lumberjacks who managed a 25-17 edge at the stripe to stay reasonably close. Dylan Garrity gave Sacramento State a contest high 26 points on 5-7 from long range followed by Eric Stuteville with 16 points and five yanks. Cody Demps and Zach Mills tossed in 13 and 12 points with Mikh McKinney netted eleven points and posted eight assists.
The Thunderbirds are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a S.U. loss and are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games overall. Southern Utah are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 vs. Big Sky and 5-12 ATS in their last 17 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. The Hornets are 6-1-1 ATS in their last 8 games following a ATS loss. The Hornets are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400 and are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 home games vs. a team with a losing road record while going 9-3 ATS in their last 12 home games. Southern Utah won't be pulling the upset and could get smacked around but I'd rather take the points or look elsewhere...
