The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles host the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs in their CUSA opener.
The Lousiana Tech Bulldogs are one of several teams that are supposed to make some noise in the CUSA. The Bulldogs have built a solid 9-4 record although the strength of schedule hasn't been the toughest. La Tech tuned up for conference play with a 74-52 rout of Southern Arkansas as they led by ten after 20 minutes and and slowly pulled a way. Both teams connected in the 44% range with the Bears giving the ball away 25 times leading to 12 more looks at the basket and five more makes that combined with an 18-5 edge at the line for an easy win. Alex Hamilton paced the offense with 17 points followed by Xavian Stapleton with 16 points. Raheem Appleby and Michael Kyser added 12 and ten points with Kyser hauling in a contest best nine rebounds.

The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles lost enough talent from last season to make them a darkhorse in 2014-15. The Golden Eagles have yet to get their scoring and defense pointed in the right direction with opponents winning the battle on the scoreboard 68-62. USM have dropped three in a row following an 87-67 defeat at LSU in which the Tigers jumped to a 16 point lead after 20 minutes and were never challenged. Southern Miss never found the shooting touch at 40% which didn't match up with the Tigers 49% and 14 extra looks. Chip Armelin tried to shoulder the scoring load all by his lonesome with a game high 28 points and six pulls on 10-16 shooting with Matt Bingaya and Davon Hayes adding 13 and eleven points respectively but the rest of the team came through with only 15 points.
The Bulldogs are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 vs. Conference USA and are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games following a SU win of more than 20 points. Louisiana Tech are 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600 and are 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 road games. The Golden Eagles are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 vs. Conference USA and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 home games vs. a team with a losing road record. Southern Miss are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600 and are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. I don't like going against home dogs but La Tech has played their schedule better...
