The #13 Notre Dame Fighting Irish host the #3 Virginia Cavaliers at the Joyce Center on Saturday.
The Virginia Cavaliers have been a very tough team for years but this season's team seems to be special and I suppose their ranking says that. The Cavs own the second ranked defense in the land that allows just 51 points and can win any number of ways. The Cavaliers have no problem scoring the basketball but they didn't need much offense in Wednesday's 61-51 victory over visiting North Carolina State. The offense struggled to 41% but the dependable UVA D held North Carolina State to 37.7% and won the battle at the line 9-2. Justin Anderson paced the Cavs with 16 points and nine rebounts with Malcolm Brogdon netting another 14 points. Anthony Gill and Mike Tobey added 12 and eleven points and combined for 12 boards.

Few teams can match the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on the scoreboard with the third ranked offense averaging an impressive 85 points. The Irish don't need a whole lot of defense but get it anyway with 62 points allowed and are just a handful when both ends of the floor are on the same page. ND received just enough of both in a 71-70 victory at North Carolina as an eight point underdog Monday. The Tar Heels were held to only 37% from the floor while connecting at 46% themselves with a 10-4 edge on threes being decisive. Notre Dame received a game high 18 points and six yanks from Zach Auguste with Pat Connaughton adding 16 points and nine boards. Demetrius Jackson followed with 15 points while Jerian Grant and VJ Beachem combined for 17 points.
The Cavaliers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 road games and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 road games vs. a team with a winning home record. Virginia are 12-3-1 ATS in their last 16 games following a ATS loss and 22-6-2 ATS in their last 30 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. The Fighting Irish are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a S.U. win and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. Notre Dame are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 Saturday games and 7-18-1 ATS in their last 26 vs. Atlantic Coast. Both teams have fantastic numbers but as a guy that loves defense I'll back Virginia...
