The Long Beach State 49ers clash with Big West foe the Cal Poly Mustangs at The Walter Pyramid.
The Cal Poly Mustangs might have gone to the Big Dance a season ago but they were not a good team as they simply got hot at the right time and won the conference playoffs. Having said that the Mustangs do look improved in 2014-15 but we'll see if that's enough to make the top guys in the Big West sweat. The offense cost them in a 50-45 loss to visiting UC Santa Barbara on Saturday as the Gauchos went on a 30-22 scoring run to overcome a three point Cal Poly lead at the half. The Mustangs could not make shots at 23% which negated 18 more looks with the Gauchos 37% from the field still being enough to win. Cal Poly received 13 points from Joel Awich with Brian Bennett turning in a ten point, ten rebound performance. Reece Morgan and Ridge Shipley supplied seven points apiece but on combined 3-20 shooting.

The Long Beach State 49ers are being outscored 71-68 and own a 7-11 record which the casual fan will dismiss as being not very good. However the 49ers play a brutally tough schedule that is ranked at number three so I'm surprised the numbers are not worse. The 49ers saw a modest two game winning streak end in a 73-67, overtime loss at UC Davis on Saturday. The defense gave up 45.5% shooting to the Aggies but did force 22 turnovers which gave the offense eleven more looks at the basket but that was neutralized by 38% from the field. Mike Caffey shouldered the scoring load with a game high 29 points, six pulls, five assists and five steals on 11-23 shooting followed by the duo of Eric McKnight and Branford Jones with eight points each as the scoring fell off after Caffey.
The Mustangs are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600 and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 road games. Cal Poly are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a winning home record and 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The 49ers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a ATS loss and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games following a S.U. loss. LBSU are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 home games vs. a team with a losing road record and 2-6 ATS in their last 8 vs. Big West. Long Beach is the better team and Cal Poly might be the most improved team in the Big West so we'll see if they are for real...
