The Cal Poly Mustangs travel to Matador Gymnasiun to battle the Cal State Northridge Matadors.
The Cal Poly Mustangs have shown improvement from the past few years but now they need to take the next step and win the close one's. The Mustangs have lost back to back contests by a combined seven points after Thursday's 50-48 defeat at Long Beach State where the 49ers broke a tie in the closing seconds. The slow pace suited CP but their marksmanship was way off at 31% but they stayed competitive because Long Beach was held to 40% shooting and a 9-3 margin on threes. Michael Bolden gave the offense 14 points on 4-9 accuracy with David Nwaba adding 12 points and five yanks. Joel Awich followed with ten points and was the only player to shoot 50% at 4-8 among the seven man rotation.
USA TODAY Sports
At 5-13 the Cal State Northridge Matadors are at the point where they either start winning or go the Cal Poly route and win the Big West playoffs or their season is in jeopardy in the best case. The Matadors took a step in the right direction in a 74-63 victory at UC Santa Barbara on Thursday night as a huge 12 point dog. The Matadors defense is not known for their stopping power but they held the Gauchos to 41% from the floor while connecting at a blistering 56% including 7-10 from beyond the arc and a massive 21-4 edge at the line to neutalize 20 more Gauchos shots. Devonte Elliott was the offensive star with a contest best 23 points and 12 rebounds on 8-12 shooting while Stephan Hicks tossed in 17 points. Stephen Maxwell and Ajon Efferson combined for 19 points with Maxwell adding six pulls.
The Mustangs are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 road games and 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall. Cal Poly are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a ATS win and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a S.U. loss. The Matadors are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games following a ATS win and 9-2 ATS in their last 11 vs. Big West. Cal State Northridge are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 Saturday games and 1-6-1 ATS in their last 8 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. I'm looking at this from the perspective that the Mustangs are improved and have faired well in this match up so I'll back them...
