The Long Beach State 49ers look to stay hot when the UC Irvine Anteaters visit The Walter Pyramid.
The UC Irvine Anteaters have established themselves as one of the top programs in the Big West because they can score and defend although neither end of the floor did well in Thursday's 75-56 defeat to visiting UC Davis who were nine point underdogs. The Aggies were clicking on all cylinders as they took a ten point lead after 20 minutes and didn't let up. UCD sank shots at nearly 54% with the Anteaters checking in at 30% which was a difference of eleven field goals. Will Davis II was the only player to reach double figures in scoring with 18 points and six pulls followed by Luke Nelson and John Ryan with seven points each while Ryan snagged a game high nine rebounds and blocked five shots. Nobody else was able to score more then six points.
USA TODAY Sports
Long Beach State is one of the hottest teams in the Big West with six consecutive victories giving them a 7-1 record and a share of first place with UC Davis. When the 49ers need scoring they get points and when they need stops the defense has come through with both ends of the floor having a hand in Thursday night's 68-63 win versus UC Riverside. LBSU held a slight 44.6%-42% shooting edge and sank seve more free throws but wer just 12-22 from the charity stripe or this would have been a double digit victory. Mike Caffey led all scorers with 20 points and five assists on 8-11 from he floor followed by a 17 point, 12 rebound performance from David Samuels. McKay LaSalle tossed in 13 points while Travis Hammonds chipped in with eight as the entire eight man rotation scored.
The Anteaters are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record and 5-1-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall. UC Irvine are 5-1-1 ATS in their last 7 vs. Big West and 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 road games. The 49ers are 13-4 ATS in their last 17 Saturday games and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games following a ATS loss. Long Beach State are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall and 4-10 ATS in their last 14 vs. Big West. I think the 49ers have blowout potential but UC Irvine will give their best effort to keep from falling further in the standings...
