The Alabama-Birmingham Blazers welcome the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles to Bartow Arena Saturday.
The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles are in a rebuilding mode and the proof is in the numbers with 6-15 record including a 1-9 mark in the CUSA. The Golden Eagle have been outscored 68-60 which are not numbers conducive to winning basketball. Middle Tennessee State extended the Golden Eagles skid to three games with a 61-51 victory where the Blue Raiders opened up a ten point lead after 20 minute and held serve the rest of the way. USM had a 45%-39% edge in marksmanship but turned the ball over 18 times with the Blue Raiders sinking four more threes an ten more free throws. Chip Armelin led USM with a game high 21 points and six pulls followed by an 18 point, six board effort from Norville Carey but the rest of the team managed just 12 points.

This season looked like it could be a rebuilding type year for the Alabama-Birmingham Blazers but they have emerged as one of the top teams in the CUSA with a 9-2 conference record which has been good for third place right now. The Blazers are coming in off of an 80-60 rout of Louisiana Tech which was one of the conference favorites heading in to 2014-15. The Blazers were up seven at the break before exploding over the final 20 minutes. The Bulldogs were limited to under 34% while UAB connected at nearly 47% with across the board advantages including a 44-26 edge on the backboards. Nick Norton paced the scoring with 16 points followed by Hakeem Baxter with 15 points and ten rebounds. Chris Cokley and Tosin Mehinti netted 12 points each and combined for 14 boards with Robert Brown chipping in with eleven points.
The Golden Eagles are 6-13 ATS in their last 19 games overall and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 Saturday games while going 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games following a ATS win. The Blazers are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 home games and 7-0 ATS in their last 7 games following a S.U. win. Alabama-Birmingham are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games vs. a team with a losing road record and 11-1 ATS in their last 12 games following a ATS win. This is a big spread in my view but UAB can not afford to let up so I give a slight nod to the home team...
