The Cincinnati Bearcats shoot for the season sweep of the Temple Owls in AAC action on Tuesday.
The Cincinnati Bearcats lost some big talent to graduation and were not give a ton of thought heading in to 2014-15 but we are learning that their suffocating defense is alive and well. The Bearcats don't have a big offense at 62 points but more then make up for it with less then 55 points allowed for the number six defense in the country. This unit was front and center in Saturday's 63-58 victory against visiting South Florida as a 15 point favorite. Cinci took an eleven point lead in to the break and fought off a late Bulls rally despite 36.7% shooting as 17 more shots and more threes and foul shots negated the 45% accuracy of USF. Farad Cobb gave the offense 16 points with Kevin Johnson netting eleven points. Troy Caupain and Octavius Ellis added eight points each with Ellis hauling in a game high ten rebounds.
USA TODAY Sports
A resurgent Temple Owls squad has emerged as a contender in the American Athletic after several season's as a non factor. The Owls lean heavily on their defense as they outscore opponents 65-60 and don't light up the scoreboard. That defense has had a hand in five consecutive victories capped off by a 61-60 victory at Memphis on Saturday as a 3.5 point underdog. A 33-22 second half run erased a ten point hole with the Tigers held to 38% shooting and forced in to 13 giveaways while the Owls survived 33% marksmanship with a 20-11 advantage at the charity stripe being decisive. Jesse Morgan paced the offense with 16 points and five yanks on just 3-12 followed by a 13 point, five assist effort from Will Cummings. Quenton DeCosey scored ten points with the duo of Jaylen Bond and Daniel Dingle scoring eight points each.
The Bearcats are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600 and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600. Cincinnati are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 Tuesday games and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. The Owls are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a S.U. win and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a ATS win. Temple are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 vs. American Athletic Conference. The Bearcats won the first meeting easily but I'm looking for a far better effort from the Owls this time...
