The Don Haskins Center will be electric when their own Texas El Paso Miners host the Old Dominion Monarchs.
The Old Dominion Monarchs are an impressive 18-5 overall but 7-4 in the CUSA with the number 15 defense doing most of the heavy lifting with just 58 points allowed. The 5th place Monarchs drive to climb in to the top four took a step back in Thursday's 72-67 road loss to Texas-San Antonio that ended a three game winning streak. ODU appeared to be in control early with a seven point lead going to the locker room but their staut defense allowed 42 second half point behind 51% shooting and their own 43% and22 more looks still couldn't get the job done with the Roadrunners 20-1 edge at the line. ODU received 19 points and six pulls from Trey Freeman while Jonathan Arledge netted 15 points. Ambrose Mosley, Aaron Bacote and Richard Ross combined for 26 points but the rest of the team scored ony seven.
USA TODAY Sports
The Texas El Paso Miners are the hottest team in the CUSA with five consecutive victories with both ends of the floor contributing to the success. With their ability to score and defend the Miners have laid claim to third in the conference with their sights set even higher. UTEP is coming off of a 73-68 win over visiting Charlotte as they made a seven point half time margin hold up. The defense did just enough with the 49ers hitting at 45% but also forced in to 21 turnovers. That made a winner out of the 49% shooting Miners who also sank an important eight more free throws. CJ Cooper paced five double figure scorers with 15 points followed by a 14 point, seven pull effort from Vince Hunter. Earvin Morris Jr. and Julian Washburn netted eleven points apiece followed by Cedrick Land with ten points and ten rebounds.
The Monarchs are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600 and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games following a S.U. loss. Old Dominion are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 road games vs. a team with a winning home record and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600. The Miners are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400 and 3-8 ATS in their last 11 home games vs. a team with a losing road record. UTEP are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS loss and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a S.U. win. I am a little leary of this one but a hot UTEP at home is the way I'm going...
