The San Jose State Spartans battle the Utah State Aggies at the Event Center Arena Wednesday night.
The Utah State Aggies have a shot at a top four finish in the Mountain West but they have to win out and hope somebody knocks off 4th place Colorado State. The Aggies have done their part with back to back victories after knocking off Nevada 75-62 as a 7.5 point home favorite. USU jumped to a nine point lead after 20 minutes and never let the Wolf Pack breathe. The Aggies burned the nets at 59.5% shooting including 9-16 from distance to outdistance the Spartans 41% and 14 more looks at the basket. The duo of Chris Smith and Jalen Moore were too much for the visitors to handle with 18 and 17 points respectively followed by a 14 point, six board effort from David Collette. Julion Pearre rounded out the top scorers with eight players scoring overall.
USA TODAY Sports
The San Jose State Spartans season is over from a competitive standpoint as they are 0-12 in the Mountain West but with a chance to play the spoiler. Of course being a spoiler means putting everything together at both ends of the floor which we have yet to see with under 54 points not able to support their defense. The struggles continued in a 77-60 defeat at Wyoming where they trailed by ten early and didn't have the firepower to fight back. SJSU hit at less then 33% but did go 10-25 from beyond the arc and sank four more free throws but the Cowboys fired away at 56% which added up to 12 more baskets. Rashad Muhammad gave San Jose State 23 points and ten rebounds on 6-19 from the floor with Jaleel Williams adding 14 points and five yanks. Five others also scored but obviously nothing was explosive.
The Aggies are 23-5 ATS in their last 28 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400 and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS win. Utah State are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 vs. Mountain West. Spartans are 18-42-3 ATS in their last 63 games overall and 17-40-2 ATS in their last 59 home games. San Jose are 15-39-3 ATS in their last 57 games following a S.U. loss and 7-19-1 ATS in their last 27 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. New Mexico needs this win and although they don't have a big offense their defense is big enough...
