The Boston College Eagles snapped a month long losing streak with a one sided rout of visiting North Carolina State on Saturday by a 79-63 count. This was one of the few times the Eagles have managed to get their scoring and defense on the same page which is obvious based on the results over the last four weeks. BC jumped to a 17 point lead after 20 minutes and traded baskets the rest of the way. Olivier Hanlan led five double digit scorers with a game high 24 points and eight boards on 7-11 shooting followed by a 14 point, seven assist effort from Patrick Heckmann on 5-6. Aaron Brown tossed in 13 points while Dmitri Batten and Dennis Clifford combined for 21 points and 13 rebounds.
I think it’s accurate to say the reason the Virginia Tech Hokies are at the bottom of the ACC standings is because they didn’t have enough scoring punch or stopping power on defense and that’s a bad combination especially in the power a packed Atlantic Coast. Having said that VT has played (and lost) a number of close contests. The Hokies player rival Virginia tough for 20 minutes before the Cavaliers finished strong in Saturday’s 69-57 victory. UVA did what they had to do to win and didn’t press the issue with 51% easily outdistancing the Hokies 38% marksmanship and adding up to six more baskets which was more then enough to emerge with the win. Adam Smith was the go to scorer with 19 points on 5-9 accuracy which included four bombs while Ahmed Hill tossed in ten points. Malik Muller and Devin Wilson combined for 17 points with the attack needing more options.
