It hasn’t been a banner year for the Longwood Lancers basketball program but like virtually every team this group gets a new lease on life during the conference playoffs. The Lancers have struggled to a 9-22 record and were just 5-13 in the Big South and most of the blame goes on the shoulders of the defense with the team being outscored 74-69 although the offense was fortunate to reach 70 points at times. The team seldom stepped up in class and don’t have any big wins that catch the eye which is not surprising with the #290 SOS.
Despite the Lancers record their ability to put the ball in the basket has to be respected as there are a few players that can put the biscuit in the basket as they say. Quincy Taylor is one of the more rounded players in the Big South as he averages over 17 points on 43.4% shooting and seldom takes a break with 36 minutes per game. Shaquille Johnson supplies offense and muscle at 13 points and five rebounds while Leron Fisher contributes another ten points. The question is who else has the potential to step up and provide some help on the scoreboard and Ryan Badowski seems to be the most likely candidate at eight points if he can shoot better then 39%. Of course the biggest question is always what the defense does or doesn’t do.
The Presbyterian Blue Hose are 10-21 with a conference mark of 6-12 built on struggles at both ends of the floor. The Blue Hose do try to slow things down at 62 points scored but they sink shots at a respectable 44.8%. Defensively opponents are averaging 69 points on 44.6% so they are getting more looks at the basket be it through offensive rebounding or turnovers. The Blue Hose do step up to face Duke each year and Louisiana Tech although the results were predictable with most opponents enjoying a size and strength advantage.
The Blue Hose can be all or nothing when it comes to scoring the basketball although they do have some dangerous talent at the offensive end. Jordan Downing paces the attack at almost 17 points an four boards on 42% while DeSean Murray averaged 15.5 points and nearly eight rebounds in 18 games. William Toss gives the Blue Hose even more in the paint with ten points and 7.5 pulls on 61% marksmanship. Marcus Terry has double digit scoring potential at seven points on 40.7% but the nucleus of this offense can both score and crash the glass.
The Lancers are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 neutral site games. The Blue Hose are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 neutral site games. The Blue Hose are 3-10 ATS in their last 13 games overall and 1-8 ATS in their last 9 games vs. a team with a losing S.U. record. Presbyterian are 1-9 ATS in their last 10 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400.Not much difference here but I think the Lancers are a tad better…
