The Charleston Southern Buccaneers are one of the favorites in the Big South as they get their first taste of the postseason with a bye in to the quarterfinals. The Buccaneers were a solid 19-10 on the year and 13-5 in the conference behind one of the top offenses in the land that averaged around 75 points that combined with a defense whose job was to keep opponents as close to 70 points as possible so scoring was what drove this team.
If you like offensive basketball Charleston Southern was a good watch with plenty of capable scorers led by Seah Nimley who averaged over 21 points and over four pulls and four assists. Arlon Harper and Will Saunders were great ‘secondary’ options at 13 points each with four and six rebounds respectively. Aaron Wheeler and Cedrick Brown had double digit scoring potential with eight points each and a combined ten boards. The Buccaneers didn’t go deep on the bench but everyone was a solid rebounder and knew how to score.
The Longwood Lancers are not known for their prowess at the defensive end of the floor but this unit saved their bacon in the first round of the postseason in a 65-61 victory against Presbyterian. The Blue Hose led by four at the intermission but eventually their 34% marksmanship eventually caught up to them. The Lancers 39% accuracy accounted for four more baskets and was enough to offset five more free throws by Presbyterian.
Shaquille Johnson was the Lancers savior on offense as he poured in a game high 25 points and hauled in eleven rebounds on 7-17 from the floor in 35 minutes. Leron Fisher was next in line with 16 points on 5-10 shooting which included a 4-5 performance from beyond the arc. Quincy Taylor added 13 points and five yanks on 4-11 from the floor with all four of his makes coming from long range. Four others contributed eleven points in a still quiet offensive effort.
The Lancers are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 neutral site games. Charleston Southern are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 vs. Big South and 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games following a S.U. win. The Buccaneers are the far better squad but Longwood has played tough in this match up but this might be pushing the envelope…
