The Longwood Lancers are probably the surprise team of all the conference postseason tournaments thus far as they have reached the Big South semifinals after finishing the regular season third from last. The Lancers pulled off their second upset with a 68-60 victory versus Charleston Southern in the quarters. The Lancers rode their defense to a 29-20 first half lead before trading baskets over the final 20 minutes. The Buccaneers never found the shooting touch at 38% while Longwood’s 43% accuracy accounted for a few more baskets with an 18-10 edge at the line being the winning stat. Shaquille Johnson carried the offense with a game high 22 points and 15 rebounds on 9-20 from the floor while Quincy Taylor added 15 points and five assists. Leron Fisher netted 12 points and handed out five assists with Darrion Allen adding eight points.
For the Winthrop Eagles the third time was the charm as they avenged a pair of regular season losses to Radford by ousting the Highlanders 67-66 as a two point favorite. Including two wins in the conference playoffs the Eagles have won eight of ten with a late rally sending them to the semifinals to face upstart Longwood. Both teams sank shots in the 39%-40% range and the rest of the boxxscore was even with an 18-21 effort at the line lifting Winthrop while Radford’s 18-29 mark at the stripe is the reason they are going home. Keon Moore pumped in a contest high 21 points with seven boards on 6-14 shooting followed by an 18 point effort from Andre Smith. Keon Johnson was next in line with 12 points while the rest of the lineup produced 14 points.
The Lancers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 vs. Big South and 8-2 ATS in their last 10 neutral site games. The Eagles are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games following a ATS loss and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 vs. Big South while going 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games overall. No line is out on this one but suspect it will approach double figures with Winthrop being one of the best teams in the Big South so please check back…
