The Sacramento State Hornets were winners of three in a row and had the Big Sky championship in their grasp with wind in the final two games of the season. Those hopes went out the window in Thursday’s 69-65 defeat at Southern Utah which dropped the Hornets into second. The Thunderbirds sank shots at 54% including 9-19 on threes while Sacramento State countered with 48% accuracy with seven more free throws to keep the game within reach. Mikh McKinney was the go to scorer with a contest high 19 points on 6-14 shooting followed by a 16 point, five yank effort from Cody Demps on 6-8. Nick Hornsby contributed eight points and eight rebounds in a rather tame offensive night for the potent scoring Hornets.
The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks are cruising in to the final game of the regular season as winners in five of six with 4th in the Big Sky as the reward. The Lumberjacks used a late surge to overcome the slowdown tactics of visiting Portland State to emerge with a 58-51 victory on Thursday. The Vikings sank shots at 35.7% and were 9-24 from beyond the arc while NAU was held to less then 32% but stayed competitive with ten more looks before ten more free throws won it. The Lumberjacks received 15 points and eight boards from Aaseem Dixon on 4-13 from the floor while Gaellan Bewernick added eleven points and 13 rebounds. Kris Yanku followed with ten points while Quinton Upshur chipped in with eight points and six pulls.
