The Big South championship features a battle between the Winthrop Eagles and the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers on Sunday.
The improbable run of the Longwood Lancers came to a crashing end at the hands of the Winthrop Eagles by a 71-58 count. A third consecutive upset was quickly put to rest as the Eagles took a ten point lead by the half and continued to fend off the Lancers over the final 20 minutes. This came down to making a few shots and hitting free throws and Winthrop did both. Longwood was competitive on 35% shooting because of ten bombs but that still couldn’t overcome 42% marksmanship and a 23-10 advantage at the stripe. Keon Johnson led a balanced offense with 15 points on 5-8 shooting with Keon Moore adding 14 points and five yanks. Xavier Cooks and Andre Smith netted eleven points apiece with five others scoring 20 points.

The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers punched their ticket to the Big South title with a 73-70 victory over stubborn Gardner-Webb in the semifinals. The Bulldogs did sink 12 more free throws but 38% eventually caught up to them. Badou Diagne was the game’s high scorer with 19 points on 8-11 from the floor with Elijah Wilson coming off the bench to toss in 13 points. Tristan Curtis added eleven points and snared a game high eight points while Josh Cameron and Warren Gillis netted eight points apiece with Gillis posting six assists and turning the ball over seven times.
