The South Carolina State Bulldogs battle the North Carolina A&T Aggies in a MEAC opener on Tuesday.
USA TODAY Sports
The North Carolina A&T Aggies finished in the bottom half of the MEAC at 6-10 with a 9-22 overall record. The Aggies were under 40% shooters as a team with an average of 59 points so allowing 66 points explains their record. The MEAC results tell us the team struggled at both ends of the floor in defeats and controlled the scoreboard in wins. NCA&T did not play a tough non conference slate and didn’t do well against the quick and athletic squads.
If the Aggies are going to steal a game or two in the conference postseason they are going to have to put the ball in the basket and Bruce Beckford is far and away the best on this team at 15 points and seven boards on 44% from the field. After Beckford it’s score by committee with eight players contributing between 4-7 points. So either Beckford has to produce more which is asking a lot or more the one guy has to step up and help out.
The South Carolina State Bulldogs find themselves in the opening round of the conference playoffs because of their 7-9 record although that was better then how things went in non conference action with the team sporting a 10-21 mark overall. The Bulldogs were outscored 67-60 and shot the ball at under 39% as a team while the opposition hit at almost 45%. The biggest win came at Houston and even though the Cougars are not good that still surprises me.
In my view South Carolina State can win a game or two if the defense tightens up a bit and the offense sinks their open looks. Of course that has been the key all season but anything can happen for one or two games in the playoffs. Can Edward Stephens give his team more then 12 points and shoot better then 39%? Can Greg Mortimer and Darryl Palmer score in double digits? If the answer to both questions is yes the Bulldogs could be dangerous.
The Aggies are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 vs. Mid-Eastern Athletic and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall while going 0-4 ATS in their last 4 neutral site games. The Bulldogs are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400 and 1-5-1 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a losing S.U. record while going 1-6-1 ATS in their last 8 games following a S.U. loss. These teams should play with the same uniforms on because they have to be twins. I can’t find an edge…
