The Marquette Golden Eagles have not had a typical season at just 12-18 and their 4-14 record in the Big East says they were not much of a factor in conference play. The Colden Eagles were outscored 67-65 but in reality the team didn’t approach these numbers very often as they dropped 12-14 to end the regular season with their scoring and defense a bit all over.
The Golden Eagles have Big East talent and have to be taken seriously in the conference tournament especially if they are consistent at both ends of the floor. Offensively the team will lean on top scorer Matt Carlino and his 15 points with Duane Wilson and Luke Fischer joining him in the double digit scoring column at 12 and eleven points respectively. The question is whether JaJuan Johnson and Juan Anderson can break the ten point barrier and if they do scoring won’t be an issue.
The Seton Hall Pirates haven’t exactly set the world on fire as a decent start quickly snowballed in to a season ending slump. The Pirates did manage a winning record at 16-14 but a 6-12 effort in conference play was surprising with losses in eight of nine to end the year. In this stretch the offense averaged around 66 points but opponents were frequent visitors to the mid 70’s.
The Pirates have shore up the defensive end of the floor or they have no shot in the postseason and will be one and done. The offense centers around 17 point scorer Sterling Gibbs who connects at 44% and has to play up to these numbers with one bad game spelling trouble. Isaiah Whitehead averages 12 points but on a dismal 36% so I want him to limit the bricks he puts up. Brandon Mobley adds ten points and five boards with Angel Delgado bringing in nine points and ten rebounds so Seton Hall would be in good shape if this pair could up their game.
The Golden Eagles are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games following a S.U. win and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games following a ATS win. Marquette are 11-29-1 ATS in their last 41 vs. Big East and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games after allowing less than 50 points in their previous game. There is a reason these teams are in the play in game and their awful finish to the year is why. I wouldn’t bet this but I would say the Pirates could be auditioning for another tournament…
