The Florida State Seminoles and Clemson Tigers face off this Wednesday afternoon in the 2nd round of the ACC Tournament at the Greensboro Coliseum.
The Florida State Seminoles finished the regular season with a 16-15 record while gaining the 9th seed in the ACC Tournament with an 8-10 conference record. Florida State had an up and down year as there but do have the size and depth to be able to make a run in the conference tournament. Florida State is ranked 119th in the RPI Standings and has played the 78th ranked SOS. Although they were competitive, Florida State wasn’t able to pick up a signature win in the ACC as their most impressive win came in a come from behind victory at home vs. Miami in early February.
USA TODAY Sports
Florida State averaged 67.0 ppg (ranked 183rd) on 45.9% shooting (ranked 74th). The Seminoles average just 4.4 three-pointers per game (ranked 324th) and commit 14.5 turnovers per game (ranked 317th). Defensively, Florida State is allowing 67.1 ppg (ranked 188th) on 41.8% shooting (ranked 118th). The Seminoles average 4.7 bpg (ranked 41st) and hold their opponents to just 32.2% shooting from beyond the arc (ranked 72nd). Leading the way for Florida State on the season has been Aaron Thomas (14.8 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 2.2 apg, 1.3 spg) and Xavier Rathan-Mayes (14.4 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 4.4 apg, 1.1 spg).
The Clemson Tigers earned the 8th seed in the ACC Tournament with an 8-10 conference record while finishing the regular season with a 16-14 overall record. Clemson’s success heavily relies on their defensive which ranked almost in the top-50 in the nation in points allowed and defensive FG percentage. Clemson is ranked 93rd in the RPI Standings and has played the 62nd ranked SOS. Clemson’s biggest wins of the season came at home against Arkansas (68-65 in OT) and at NC State (68-57).
Clemson averaged 62.4 ppg (ranked 289th) on 40.9% shooting (ranked 287th). The Tigers average 5.5 three-pointers per game (ranked 256th) on 29.6% three-point shooting (ranked 324th). The Tigers average 4.8 bpg (ranked 37th) and commit just 16.1 personal fouls per game. Leading the way for Clemson on the season has been Jaron Blossomgame (13.1 ppg, 8.2 rpg, 1.0 apg) and Donte Grantham (8.9 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 1.5 apg).
Florida State and Clemson split their regular season series as Florida State won at Clemson 59-55, however lost at home 62-56. Both of these teams rely on their defensive and size to keep the game low-scoring however, I feel that Florida State has more options on the offensive end when they need a bucket. Both teams have struggled near the end of the season however, Clemson has only won 2 of their last 8 games with those two wins coming against Virginia Tech and Boston College. This should be a close game, however, I think Florida State will utilize their size and find enough offense to win and advance in this one. Take Florida State and the points.
