The #6 seed American U. Eagles have been the surprise squad in the Patriot League playoffs with their defense controlling the scoreboard while their offense has been surprisingly effective. The Eagles punched their ticket to the title game with a 73-62 victory over #2 Colgate in which they jumped to a 17 point lead at the break before turning back a Raiders comeback. The entire starting five reached double figures with a 62%-45% edge in shooting being the difference. John Schoof tossed in a game high 17 points with six pulls on 6-8 shooting including four bombs while Pee Wee Gardner went 6-8 for another 15 points. Charlie Jones and Jesse Reed followed with 14 points and nine rebounds with Mako Vasic netting 13 points.
The Lafayette Leopards are known for their potent scoring and not one thing has changed that in the conference playoffs. An 89-64 rout of Boston U. in the quarters followed by an 80-74 decision against top ranked Bucknell has the Leopards in the championship. A 49-40 second half erased a three point deficit behind 53% marksmanship and a 21-24 performance at the charity stripe overcame 43% shooting and eleven more looks at the basket by the Bison. Nick Ledner gave the Leopards a game high 23 points and seven helpers with Dan Trist right on his heels with 21 points on 8-10 shooting. Joey Ptasinski followed with 18 points on 6-7 while Bryce Scott contributed another eleven points for an offense that was explosive and balanced.
The Leopards are driven by their offense that is one of the top units in the game. The Eagles are the complete opposite as they would like to slow this game to a pace that would make a snail look like a blur. I am a defensive guy by nature and to me a good defense wins games and championships although it's more about pace with AU but I still gravitate towards the points and hope more are coming with plenty of time between now and game time…
