Not too many years ago the Mississippi Valley Delta Devils played a brutally tough non conference schedule to ready them for league action. Not this year with the team sitting at 6-25 with a 5-13 record in the Southwest. The problems are typical with not enough points scored and too and given up with the Delta Devils being outscored 80-63 with the defense struggling the most while dropping five of six to end the season.
For a team that needs scoring the status of leading scorer Jordan Washington and his nearly 14 points is a concern with an unknown injury. If Washington can’t go the trio of Jeffrey Simmons, DeAngelo Priar and Isaac Williams will be asked to shoulder the bulk of the scoring which means their combined 32 points will have to rise significantly or the defense does an about face and becomes stingy and I don’t think that’s an alternative.
The Alabama State Hornets have had a solid season which got better when a season ending victory against Jackson State secured second on the Southwest. The Hornets finished at 18-9 overall and 14-4 in the conference behind competitive play at both ends of the floor. ASU has outscored the opposition 72-66 and generally performed even better at the defensive end in conference play.
Alabama State has shortage of offensive weapons with Jamel Waters leading the way with 13 points and over five assists. DeMarcus Robinson added over ten points but this team was the very definition of balance with six others netting between 5-9 points which makes this team difficult to defend because there are numerous options. Throw in a decent defense that might have upped their game and the Hornets are a challenger for the crown.
The Hornets have the ability to get the job done at either end of the floor and have done just that most of the season. Mississippi Valley State is like an anti-Alabama State and their numbers tell us that. I think the potential to cover is the Hornets but I worry if they get a big lead that their foot comes off the gas pedal…
