The Delaware State Hornets are one game away from the semis after rallying past Savannah State 64-58 in round one of the MEAC playoffs to earn their third straight win. The Tigers led by one at the break before the Hornets finally got the offense going late in the second half behind 52% marksmanship and an 11-0 edge at the stripe that negated 18 more looks at the basket and 40% shooting of the Tigers who were just 6-27 from beyond the arc.
Amere Gay was a one man wrecking crew for Delaware State with a game high 26 points and six pulls on 11-18 from the floor with Tyshawn Bell adding 14 points and six boards. Todd Hughes followed with eleven points on 5-5 shooting while Kendall Gray supplied plenty of muscle in the paint with eight points, 12 rebounds and four blocks on 3-3 accuracy. The Hornets did play ten but only five saw significant time.
The Howard Bison cracked the top four in the MEAC with a solid 10-6 record but their 16-15 overall record says the non conference slate was a bit too difficult to handle. The defensive minded Bison outscore opponents 64-63 and allow 39% shooting so controlling the scoreboard was priority number one and the results tell us that the team fared well when the defense performed well.
Obviously Howard didn’t look to light up the scoreboard although there was some talent at this end of the floor with James Carlton leading the way with team highs of 16 points and eight rebounds on 48% marksmanship. James Miller was a very dependable scorer at almost 12 points on 50.8% shooting while James Daniel added almost 16 points on a team low 33% from the field which tells me either he needs to practice his shooting or let somebody else take the shots.
The Hornets are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record and 4-10 ATS in their last 14 games following a S.U. win. Delaware State are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 vs. Mid-Eastern Athletic. The Bison are 7-18-1 ATS in their last 26 games overall and 3-8 ATS in their last 11 neutral site games. Howard are 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a S.U. loss and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 vs. Mid-Eastern Athletic. No line has been released yet so please check back…
