By all accounts the San Diego State Aztecs have enjoyed a fantastic regular season at 24-7 with a 14-4 conference record that would have been good for a first place tie in the Mountain West with Boise State except the Broncos swept the season series. The defense first Aztecs averaged just 62 points but that was generally golden with 53 points given up on less the 38% shooting.
The key for SDSU in the postseason is to continue playing their shut down style of defense and to put enough points on the scoreboard to not waste a strong defensive effort. Winston Shepard and Aqeel Quin are eleven pint scorers while JJ O’Brien adds around ten points on 47% marksmanship so this trio has to produce with the score by committee supporting cast keeping up their end of the bargain which is add a few points and defend.
The UNLV Rebels might be just 7th in the Mountain West but could be the best 7th seed in the country with numerous close games. That wasn’t a worry in an opening round 67-46 rout of Nevada where the Rebels led by ten at the half way point and continued the carnage until the final buzzer. UNLV didn’t set the world on fire at 41.8% shooting but that was a huge number with the Wolf Pack connecting at less then 29%.
The offense received a game high 28 points from Christian Wood on 9-13 from the field while he grabbed seven rebounds and blocked three shots. Jordan Cornish was the only other double digit scorer with 13 points on 4-7 accuracy with he and Wood being the only players to approach 50% from the floor. Jelan Kendrick chipped in with eight points and snagged six boards with eight players scoring altogether.
The Runnin' Rebels are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 vs. Mountain West. UNLV are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games following a S.U. win and 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games following a SU win of more than 20 points. The Aztecs are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 neutral site games and 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 games following a SU win of more than 20 points while going 7-15-1 ATS in their last 23 Thursday games. I don’t entirely trust the Aztecs because of their sketchy scoring but UNLV has been awful in this match up so take this with a grain of salt…
