This was supposed to be a season of rebuilding for the Memphis Tigers but the team has still done a solid job of winning at 18-13 and 10-8 in the conference. The Tigers have outscored opponents 67-63 but are still playing very good defense with less then 40% shooting given up on the number 61 strength of schedule. The Tigers did drop three of four to end the regular season with inconsistent play at both ends of the floor.
Even though Memphis can score and has stopping power the defensive end of the floor will determine their fate if the offense lends a hand. The Tigers go to scorer is Austin Nichols at 13 points and six boards on nearly 50% shooting. After Nichols there are numerous players that have and will need to help out in the scoring department. Shaq Goodwin is at the top of the list with 9.5 points and a team leading seven rebounds while Trashon Burrell averages nine points and five boards. This trio represents the core of the scoring and rebounding and are the best shooters.
If you are a fan of the Temple Owls the past few years were very uncharacteristic of this team as opposing squads were lighting up the scoreboard. The Owls didn’t have any physicality and were often helpless defensively although we have seen an about face from this team with less then 60 points allowed on around 39% shooting while scoring 65 which had the team staring at a 22-9 record with a 13-5 mark in the AAC.
Temple was scorching hot down the stretch with wins in 10-12 where opponents reached 63 points just once in the victories. The problem this team faces is they are not very good shooters as a team at below 40% accuracy. Will Cummings and Quenton DeCosey pace the attack with 14 and 12 points but connect at 39% and 37% respectively. Jesse Morgan averaged 12 points in 21 games but hit shots at only 35% so there is cause for concern when your top three threats don’t break 40% shooting.
The Tigers are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games following a S.U. loss and 20-9 ATS in their last 29 games following a ATS loss. Memphis are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record and 3-13 ATS in their last 16 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600. The Owls are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 games following a S.U. win and 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games following a ATS win. Temple are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games overall and 9-3 ATS in their last 12 vs. American Athletic Conference. As I said, Temple does not shoot the ball well so it’s scary backing them but as a fan I just want a win…
