The Eastern Washington Eagles moved one step closer to the Field of 64 with a 91-83 win against Sacramento State in the Big Sky semifinals. It’s dangerous to try a run and score with this squad and the Hornets found that out with 49% shooting still not enough to top the Eagles 58% accuracy who also nailed 15-25 from long range. EWU was balanced and explosive with Felix Von Hofe pacing the offense with 23 points and seven boards on 7-8 on threes with Venky Jois adding 19 points and six helpers on 9-12 from the floor. Bogdan Bliznyuk tossed in 16 points on 5-8 marksmanship with Parker Kelly scoring eleven followed by nine point efforts from Drew Brandon and Tyler Henry.
The Montana Grizzlies were supposed to still be in the rebuilding process but how much rebuilding they need after reach the conference championship probably isn’t much. The Grizzlies slid by Northern Arizona 61-59 in a game that was as close as the boxscore. The Lumberjacks never found the shooting touch on 34.5% accuracy but stayed close to the 44% shooting Grizzlies with seven more looks and five more free throws. Jordan Gregory carried the offense with 21 points on 7-14 from the field while Riley Bradshaw and Martin Breunig netted ten points apiece with Breunig snagging eight boards. Mario Dunn supplied plenty of muscle on the backboards with eleven rebounds to go with his eight points.
The Grizzlies really surprised me because they were outstanding in the conference at 14-4 and logged another 20+ win season. The Eagles seemed to be the best team in the Big Sky from early on and eventually proved it by winning the league. The key here is pace and if Eastern Washington can speed things up their chances are good while the Grizzlies will try to muddy the water. No line out yet so please check back…
The Grizzlies can do some scoring as well but play the better defense so I'll back them.
