Georgia Southern vs. Louisiana-Monroe - Sun Belt Chamionship - 3/14/15 Pick, Odds, and Prediction

The Georgia Southern Eagles finished the regular season with a 21-8 record and earned the 2-seed in the Sun Belt Championship with a 14-6 conference record. Georgia Southern wasn’t expected to do anything in their first season in the Sun-Belt but has surprised everyone and almost earned the regular season title. The Eagles are ranked 125th in the RPI Standings and has played the 307th ranked SOS. Georgia Southern’s biggest wins of the season have come against Georgia State and UL-Monroe.

Georgia Southern is averaging 70.1 ppg (ranked 98th) on 42.5% shooting (ranked 223rd). The Eagles average 7.7 three-pointers per game (ranked 53rd) on just 32.4% three-point shooting (ranked 254th). Georgia Southern averages 12.0 apg (ranked 215th) and commits 12.1 turnovers per game (ranked 127th). Defensively, Georgia Southern is holding their opponents to an average of 61.5 ppg (ranked 53rd) on 39.7% shooting (ranked 42nd). The Eagles average 7.6 spg (ranked 45th) and are holding opponents to just 30.9% three-point shooting (ranked 36th). Georgia Southern pulls down 37.69 ppg (ranked 37th) and have a rebound margin of 2.2 (ranked 105th). On the season, the Eagles have been led by Jelani Hewitt (18.2 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 3.8 apg) and Trent Wiedeman (11.8 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 1.1 apg).

The Warhawks are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games following a S.U. win however, just 1-5-1 ATS in their last 7 neutral site games. The Eagles are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games following a ATS loss and 6-2-1 in their last 9 games following a S.U. loss.

UL-Monroe and Georgia Southern split their regular season series as UL-Monroe won 57-53 at home and loss 71-68 (OT) at Georgia Southern. UL-Monroe was atop of the Sun Belt conference for much of the season however, struggled towards the end of the season going just 3-3 in their last 6 games. Georgia Southern used a stifling defense to climb atop of the Sun Belt standings however at times have struggled on the offensive end. Both of these teams have great defenses and I expect this one to be another low scoring tight game. Georgia Southern relies on the three-pointer for a lot of their offensive however, I think UL-Monroe will be able to limit the damage that the Eagles could do outside and that when this one comes down to the buzzer, I’m going to be happy to have the 3 points at the end of this one. Take UL-Monroe and the points.
