Sam Houston State had the misfortune of sharing the Southland with Stephen F. Austin and there can only be one king of the hill and that was the Lumberjacks who knocked off the Bearkats in the title game to ‘drop’ SHSU to 16-2 in the conference. Overall the Bearkats built their 25-8 record behind great scoring at 74 points and suffocating defense that allows 59 points on less then 39% shooting. The Bearkats lost to UNLV and Texas A&M by a combined five points so their weak SOS is just a number. DeMarcus Gatlin is the lone double digit scorer at around eleven points six others contribute between 5-9+ points which gives new meaning to balance.
The North Carolina-Wilmington looked like they had a legitimate shot at winning the Colonial before falling to eventual champion Northeastern in the quarterfinals. The Seahawks were a tough nut to crack at times and vastly improved over prior seasons but sometimes struggled to get both ends of the floor on the same page. UNCW outscored opponents 70-68 which left little room for error but an 18-13 season is a nice record for this program. The Seahawks #225 strength of schedule included a few toughies but no wins to speak of. Addison Spruill led a three pronged attack with 14 points and 6.5 rebounds with Freddie Jackson and Craig Ponder netting 13 and eleven points.
The Seahawks are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games following a S.U. loss and 6-0 ATS in their last 6 Wednesday games. UNCW are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games following a ATS loss and 7-1-1 ATS in their last 9 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. The Bearkats are 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 home games vs. a team with a losing road record. Sam Houston State are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 games following a S.U. loss and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games following a ATS loss. The trends tell me Seahawks but I’m going with a very good home team…
