The High Point Panthers are known for their ability to score the basketball so they received an added bonus when the defense chipped in to down Maryland-Eastern Shore 70-64 in the opening round of the CIT. A late surge carried the day as the Hawks closed a DD deficit to just four points. UMES held a slight 43%-40.8% shooting edge but turned the ball over 18 times to negate nine more looks at the basket. The Panthers turn 26 Hawks fouls in to a 26-8 advantage which was the difference. John Brown carried the offensive load with a contest high 23 points and seven boards with Devante Wallace adding 19 points and five yanks while Lorenzo Cugini tossed in ten points and snared a game high nine rebounds.
The Eastern Kentucky Colonels probably had their best chance at winning the Ohio Valley this season but instead dropped a one point decision to eventual champion Belmont in the conference semifinals. The Colonels didn’t have a cakewalk in the opening round of the CIT where the earned a hard fought 81-75 decision against Norfolk State. The Spartans were a scorching 61% from the floor and 9-15 on threes which was countered by the Colonels 52% shooting and 13-31 performance from beyond the arc with eight more free throws. Eric Stutz and Corey Walden netted 22 points apiece with Walden posting five yanks and eight helpers. Timmy Knipp and Ja’Mill Powell added 13 and 12 points with nine players scoring overall.
The Panthers are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600 and 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games following a S.U. win. High Point are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 non-conference games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS loss. The Colonels are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games and 2-8-1 ATS in their last 11 home games vs. a team with a winning road record. Eastern Kentucky are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS loss and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 home games. The Colonels probably have the potential but I don’t like how their defense performs at times…
