The Louisville Cardinals don’t look like the 900 pound gorilla they have been in what seems like every year as the offense has been sputtering along. It sputtered once again in their 57-55 opening round victory against UC Irvine. The Anteaters held a 46%-42% edge in marksmanship but hurt themselves with 14 giveaways and a mere two trips to the foul line while the Cardinals sank four more at the charity stripe which proved to be decisive. Wayne Blackshear pumped in a game high 19 points and snared seven boards while Quentin Snider added 16 points and five yanks. Terry Rozier followed with 12 points and five helpers with Montrezl Harrell chipping in with eight.
The Northern Iowa Panthers generally rolled over the competition during the regular season and that trend carried over in to the NCAA opener where they hammered Mountain West champion Wyoming 71-54. All dreams of an upset by the Cowboys were put to rest early with UNI up eleven at the break and refusing to buckle. Both teams sank shots in the 46% range but the Panthers dominated the charity stripe 16-3 which made the difference. Paul Jesperson paced five double digit scorers with 16 points on 5-8 from the floor while Seth Tuttle added 14 points and nine rebounds. Nate Buss was next in line with 13 points while Wes Washpun and Deon Mitchell netted ten points apiece.
Let’s look at this from a logical standpoint as we have a Panthers squad that is an exceptional defensive team that is going against a perennial power in Louisville that doesn’t have a lot of scoring options. That would seem to play in to the strength of Northern Iowa who also have scoring ability so for now I’ll take the Panthers and hope for some points…
