The South Dakota State Jackrabbits won the regular season Summit League crown but dropped the championship to North Dakota State by a single point so many wondered what the mental state of this team was heading in to their NIT opener. Not to worry as the Jackrabbits opened a nine point lead at the break and went wire to wire in an 86-76 win over Colorado State. The Rams were held to less then 41% shooting while SDSU connected at around 45% including a 12-28 effort from distance. George Marshall poured in a game high 24 points with six assists including five bombs while Deondre Parks added 17 points and eight boards. Jake Bittle followed with 15 points and five yanks with Reed Tellinghuisen chipped in with ten points.
The Vanderbilt Commodores finished 7th in the SEC but they were a very solid team with ability at both ends of the floor. The Commodores did a lot of both as they opened up the NIT with a 75-64 victory at Saint Mary’s. Vandy took an eight point lead in to the intermission and were never seriously challenged as a 2.5 point underdog. It all started with defense with the Gaels limited to 38% accuracy including 3-18 from the perimeter. Vanderbilt responded with over 49% marksmanship which resulted in five more baskets which was the key to winning. Damian Jones gave the offense 21 points and a team high seven boards on 10-14 from the floor with Riley LaChance supplying 17 points and five helpers. Jeff Roberson and Wade Baldwin IV each scored ten while James Siakam added eight points and six pulls.
The Jackrabbits are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 non-conference games and 11-1 ATS in their last 12 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. SDSU are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600 and 18-5 ATS in their last 23 games overall. The Commodores are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600 and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. Vanderbilt are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games overall and 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 Friday games. This line seems about two points light so I think Vandy wins but if forced to choose a side I’ll take the points…
