The Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks have seen improved play at both ends of the floor and the results can be seen in their record and a quarterfinal berth in the CIT. After breaking the century mark in the tournament opener the Skyhawks turned up the defensive intensity in defeating USC Upstate 60-48 in the second round. A 31-18 second half erased a two point deficit deficit as the Spartans were held to under 30% accuracy with a 4-33 effort from long range doing them in. UTM connected at only 28% but hit six more bombs and four more free throws. Twymond Howard gave the Skyhawks 15 points and seven boards with Deville Smith adding 14 points and seven more pulls. Alex Anderson score 13 points while Marshun Newell chipped in with nine points and eight rebounds.
The Eastern Kentucky Colonels were one of the top teams in the Ohio Valley with a one point loss to Belmont in the conference playoffs doing them in. The Colonels opened the CIT with a six point win versus Norfolk State and followed with a 66-65 victory against High Point to reach the tournament quarterfinals. A late Colonels run negated a five point hole to squeeze out the win. Both teams sank shots in the 46% range with the Panthers dominating the foul line 13-1 while Eastern Kentucky was unstoppable from the perimeter with a 13-25 performance with sic more looks producing three more baskets. Corey Walden led three double digit scorers with 19 points, seven boards and five assists with Eric Stultz adding 16 points and ten rebounds. Isaac McGlone followed with 14 points while Ja’Mill Powell chipped in with eight points.
