The Arizona Wildcats struggled early but came on late to knock off a determined Ohio State 73-58 to advance to the Sweet 16. The Wildcats used a 47-33 second half run to blow open a close game despite less then 37% marksmanship with 19 offensive rebounds leading to eleven more looks and three more baskets. Seven more free throws and the Buckeyes 38.5% accuracy wasn’t enough to be competitive for 40 minutes. The tandem of TJ McConnell and Gabe York tallied 19 points apiece with York hitting five bombs while McConnell posted six boards, six assists and five steals. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson added eleven points ant ten rebounds with Kaleb Tarczewski netted eight points and nine boards.
The Georgia State Panthers had their sights set on another upset and a trip to the Sweet 16 but the Xavier Musketeers had different plans. The Musketeers turned back the Panthers 75-67 to advance instead. GSU had great numbers with nearly 58% accuracy and eleven more looks yet that was still not enough with XU blasting away at an uncanny 67.6% while turning 20 Panthers personals in to a 22-25 performance at the charity stripe which proved to be the difference down the stretch in the final minute. Jalen Reynolds led the offense with a contest high 21 points and six pulls on 8-9 shooting with Myles Davis netting 17 points on 5-8 from the field. Dee Davis added 15 points and five assists followed by a nine point, six board performance from Matt Stainbrook.
These teams have never met so nothing to go on from that standpoint although this Xavier team looks like the one from season’s past as in they do damage when in the NCAA tournament. Having said that the Wildcats are outstanding in all phases and aren’t afraid to put the hammer down and keep it there. Right now I’ll back Zona and watch the line and money as the week goes on…
