The Evansville Purple Aces appeared to have zero momentum heading in to the CIT with four consecutive defeats before righting the ship just in time with back to back victories in the tournament after crushing Eastern Illinois 83-63 in round two. The Purple Aces took a ten points lead after 20 minutes and cruised the rest of the way. The Panthers were held to 40% accuracy which proved to be no match for the Purple Aces 53% marksmanship which equaled seven more buckets. DJ Balentine pored in a contest high 22 points with five yanks on 9-18 shooting with Egidijus Mockevicius adding 21 points and 16 rebounds on 7-12. Duane Gibson and Jaylon Brown scored ten points each while Blake Simmons and Adam Wing netted eight points apiece.
The Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns were one of the hottest teams in the Sun Belt before their NCAA tournament hopes went down the drain in an 83-79 semifinal loss to eventual conference champion Georgia State who went on to win their first round game. A last second three kept the Ragin’ Cajuns season alive in a 71-70 at Sam Houston State in round number two of the CIT. ULL appeared to be in complete control with a nine point lead at the intermission before the Bearkats rallied to make a game of it. SHSU sank shots at 40% but thanks to 16 turnovers and 13 offensive rebounds mustered 14 more looks to stay competitive with UL Lafayette’s 52% marksmanship. Jay Wright led all scorers with 19 points followed by 14 point, seven board effort from Shawn Long. Devonta Walker and Kasey Shepherd added 13 and eleven points with seven players scoring overall.
The Purple Aces are 8-2-1 ATS in their last 11 non-conference games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games. Evansville are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a winning home record and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 vs. Sun Belt. The Ragin' Cajuns are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a S.U. win and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600. Louisiana-Lafayette are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a ATS win and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record.
