The Louisville Cardinals and North Carolina State Wolfpack take the floor in Sweet 16 action.
The first number one seed was sent home courtesy of North Carolina State as they upended Villanova behind solid perimeter and interior play. The Wolfpack took a four point lead at the halfway point and held on to it as their guards seemed a step quick for the Wildcats and the big men seemed to grab every key rebound. Nova helped out with just 31% shooting with a 9-28 performance on threes hurting them. NC State countered with 45% marksmanship and hit 20-27 from the line which is uncharacteristic. Trevor Lacey led four double digit scorers with 17 points and six pulls while Anthony Barber and Abdul-Malik Abu netting 13 points apiece with Abu grabbing 12 rebounds. Leonard Freeman followed with eleven points and another 12 boards with Desmond Lee chipping in with seven points.
The Louisville Cardinal had surprisingly little trouble in knocking off highly touted Northern Iowa 66-53 to advance to the Sweet 16. The Cardinals were supposed to have trouble scoring the basketball but hit shots at a respectable 45.8% and nailed 17-21 from the charity stripe. With the Panthers limited to 39% from the floor that alone was a difference of four baskets and with just eleven free throws UNI was never really a factor with their vaunted defense not being effective. Terry Rozier gave the Cardinals a contest high 25 point with five yanks and seven assists while Montrezl Harrell added 14 points and seven boards on a combined 13-24 from the floor. Quentin Snider and Wayne Blackshear scored ten points apiece and grabbed ten rebounds between them with the rest of the team managing seven points.
The Wolfpack are 9-2-1 ATS in their last 12 games following a ATS win and 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. North Carolina are 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600 and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games overall. The Cardinals are 25-10 ATS in their last 35 neutral site games and 11-5 ATS in their last 16 NCAA Tournament games. Louisville are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games following a ATS win and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall NC State won the lone match up this year so they can win this and as a huge fan I am hoping they do…
