It seems as if Tom Izzo and his Michigan State Spartans have an internal clock that warns them when tournament time rolls around. The clock should have warned Virginia instead as MSU knocked off the Cavaliers 60-54 in the Field of 32 behind suffocating defense. The Spartans made a five point lead at the break hold up as the Cavs were limited to less then 30% shooting including a 2-17 effort on threes. MSU connected at 42.5% and hit 6-12 from beyond the arc to negate Virginia’s 17 extra looks. Travis Trice paced the attack with a contest high 23 points on 7-15 shooting while Branden Dawson scored 15 points and grabbed a team high nine rebounds. Bryn Forbes chipped in with seven points but Dawson and Trice were the offense.
The Oklahoma Sooners are one of two Big 12 squads still standing in the Big Dance with a combination of scoring and defense leading the way. The Sooners received just enough of both to upend Dayton 72-66 to advance to the Sweet 16. OU held a slight 45%-43% shooting advantage but this game down to foul shooting and the Sooners turned 20 Flyers personals in to a 19-24 performance at the charity stripe to outdistance Dayton’s 11-13 effort which was the difference. Jordan Woodard led three double digit scorers with 16 points on 3-9 from the floor while Buddy Hield added 15 points and five helpers. Frank Booker netted 12 points with TaShawn Thomas and Isaiah Cousins scored nine points apiece with nine and six rebounds respectively.
The Sooners might have a chip on their shoulder and the weight of the conference as well with four of the six teams from the Big 12 already eliminated. For whatever reason Tom Izzo has the Spartans in the National Championship hunt once again but the reason is this guy is one of the best in the business and I guarantee no team ever wants to face the Spartans at tournament time. I’m hoping the Spartans journey continues because I’ll lay the basket here…
